Hugh's MP3 Pick: 4/5/00

Althea Lawrence
"Fennario"

Fennario, also known as "Pretty Peggy-O" is a traditional ballad of Scottish origin and traveled to the southern U.S. where, in the early 1800s, the location was changed to somewhere in Louisianna. Versions of this ballad were recorded by Baez, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and it was performed in concert by the Grateful Dead. The song, and Dylan's quip "I been all 'round this country but I never did find Fenario," inspired the name of this site's electronic newsltetter/musical magazine. What accounts for its perennial popularity and sudden appeal in the 60's? Take a listen...

This beautiful version of the ballad has been on mp3.com's folk top ten for a long time. Lawrence, of the Celtic group Slainte out of Olympia WA, has a fine voice.
