Founded in 1980 and held in the shadow of the gracious
12th century Minster Church of St Cuthburga, this annual
event of Traditional Folk Dance and Song has become the
focal point for the largest gathering of dance teams in the

The Festival as we know it today, was started
by
Michael and late wife Jean Eavis back in 1970, when
1,500 paying £1.00 turned out to see Marc Bolan of
T Rex and a handful of pop and folk stars."Today
tickets are limited to 100,000, but its popularity is
such that it would not be difficult to sell many thousands
more", says Michael. Notables on the folk/roots/blues
