Collins, Lui and Dana Robinson
Paired Down
(Molly Gamblin Music/Threshold Music)

Collins and Robinson have formed one of the most artistically satisfying folk duos to come around in a long time. They sound absolutely timeless. Ever since Dana's recording of "Shady Grove" he's come into his own as a traditionalist, playing guitar, fiddle and mandolin and using his voice in ways that make even his own compositions sound like they come to us over many, many years. Lui keeps her legendary appeal, returning from a long foray into new-age philosophy to give us purer love lyrics and melodies with the feel of woodcuts. Both are mastering the art of a very simple poetry that conveys a depth of feeling and experience. This recording of the duo's "paired down" live performances in the studio is close to perfect in conveying their rare blend of voices and visions. Eight originals and the traditional Appalachian ballad "Little Sadie." -HB
